Zhang Hongcheng

Zhang Hongcheng, elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2015, graduated from Jiangsu Agricultural College in 1975 majoring in Agronomy. He is currently a professor at the Agricultural College of Yangzhou University, the academic leader of the National Key Discipline Crop Cultivation and Tillage. He also serves as Deputy Head of the Advisory Panel of Rice of the Ministry of Agriculture, Director of the Cultivation Committee of Crop Science Society of China (CSSC), and Director of the Rice Planting Technology Innovation Center of the Yangtze River Basin.

Professor Zhang' research focuses primarily on the crop cultivation and tillage. He has won more than 30 research grants from the National Science and Technology Support Programs, the National Natural Science Foundation, and other major or key projects at the provincial and ministerial levels. He has been reputed nationwide for his pioneering work in the field of smart, precision and mechanized crop cultivation and tillage. He has won three second prizes and one third prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and seven first or second prizes of the Science and Technology Progress Award at provincial and ministerial levels. In terms of new technology of tillage and cultivation and its application, he has made a significant breakthrough in such achievements as zero, minimum, deep and rotating tillage styles and preventing premature-aging technology. In addition, he has established the light and simplified tillage and cultivation technology system, mainly zero, minimum tillage and broadcasting seedling in South China’s rice region, which supersedes traditional intensive and meticulous farming, ends up strenuous manual labor of bending up in field to transplant seedlings for peasants in China, and realizes the unification of the light, simplified cultivation and stabilized, increased yield. Regarding precise quantitative cultivation theory and technology for high yield of rice and its application, he has made a breakthrough in precise quantitative cultivation theories and methods of growth process, population dynamics and key cultivation measures. Furthermore, he has set up the quantitative cultivation technology for high yield of rice, which fosters the transition from the qualitative to the quantitative in rice cultivation in China. In the aspect of key technologies of super rice high yield cultivation and their regional integrated application, he has proposed the theory for breaking the bottleneck of super rice yield increase, and established mechanized high yield cultivation technology based on standardized seedling raising, precision mechanized transplanting and modeling regulation, which facilitates Jiangsu to stand first in yield of rice in unit area among nationwide major growing areas and takes the lead in mechanized cultivation of rice in China. The above three achievements have been ranked as national main extension technologies of rice industry by the Ministry of Agriculture of China, and achieved great social and economic benefits after application.

As an expert enjoying the Special Allowance from the State Council since 1992, Professor Zhang held numerous titles and honors including “National Outstanding Young Experts” in 1994, “National Model Teacher” in 1998, “Outstanding Academic Leader of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions” in 1999; “National May 1st Labor Medal” in 2004; the Chief Young and Middle-aged Scientist of “333 Talent Project” in Jiangsu Province in 2007, and “National Grain Production Advanced Worker Model” in 2008. He was awarded by the State Council as the "Agricultural Scientist for Outstanding Contributions to National Grain Production" in 2011. He was given the "China Agricultural Talents Award", "He Liang He Li Fund Science and Technology Progress Award", and "Science and Technology Achievement Award of CSSC" in 2012.

Entitled to obtain 5 patents, Professor Zhang is the author of 18 books and 279 research articles. He has been honored to receive numerous awards in teaching, including “Crop Cultivation” as the National Excellent Program. He published Introduction to Agricultural Standardization, which was the first textbook of the same kind in China, and won the second prize for Outstanding Teaching Award.
