On December 4, the 2025 Yangzhou University-Pacific Island Countries Higher Education and Research Institutions Academic Strategy Symposiumwas hosted in Yangzhou University. President Liu Qiaoquanof Yangzhou University, Vice Mayor Chen Junof Yangzhou City, Nelson Simbiken, Director General of the National Agricultural Research Institute of Papua New Guinea, Andrew Taylor Awa, Executive Director of International Relations of Solomon Islands National University, and Chen Xin, Vice President of Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, attended the event and delivered speeches. Vice President Zhao Wenming presided over the meeting.
Liu Qiaoquan briefly introduced the university’s recent developments and internationalization efforts. He expressed hopes to deepen research collaboration and innovation with higher education and research institutions in Pacific Island countries, aiming for breakthroughs in areas such as crop breeding, green production, post-harvest processing, and food safety control. He emphasized strengthening joint talent cultivation to promote two-way exchanges of faculty, researchers, and students, fostering the development of internationally-minded professionals with solid expertise and strong innovation capabilities. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of advancing the application of research outcomes by facilitating the adaptive testing and demonstration of advanced agricultural technologies from China in Pacific Island countries to enhance local agricultural production and industrial upgrading. Finally, he proposed establishing a regular communication mechanism to ensure sustained and effective cooperation, jointly creating a mutually beneficial future.
Chen Jun stated that Yangzhou City would fully support the cooperation and exchanges between Yangzhou University and Pacific Island countries. He expressed hope for collaborative innovation in areas such as food security, food nutrition, and modern agriculture, promoting the deep integration of innovation chains and industrial chains, enhancing cultural exchanges, and fostering mutual understanding, thereby making Yangzhou a solid bridge of friendship between China and Pacific Island countries.
The event was attended by representatives from the Embassy of Papua New Guinea in China; the Yangzhou Foreign Affairs Office, Science and Technology Bureau, and Modern Agricultural Environment Investment and Development Group; as well as heads of university departments and colleges, including the University Office, Office of Science and Technology, International Office, College of Agriculture, College of Plant Protection, College of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, College of Animal Science and Technology, College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Food Science, and Overseas Education College.
