The College of Horticulture and Plant Protection at Yangzhou University was established in September 2006 in accordance with the needs of discipline construction and development. The school history can be traced back to 1902, in which year Zhang Qian founded “Tonghai Xue Tang”. Our college has 4 academic departments (majors): Plant Protection, Ecology, Horticulture and Landscape Gardening.

The school  has one post-doctoral research station in Plant Protection, and is authorized to grant Ph D in the first level discipline of Plant Protection including Agricultural Entomology & Pest Control, Plant Pathology, Pesticide Science,  Invasive species and biosecurity, Horticultural plants resistance and resource utilization;  is authorized to grant Master degree  in two first-level disciplines: Plant Protection and Horticulture, and Master’s degree in six second-level disciplines: Agricultural Entomology, Plant Pathology, Vegetable Science, Pomology, Pesticide Science and Tea Science. It has 5 university key disciplines such as Agricultural Entomology, Plant Pathology, Vegetable Science, Pomology, Pesticide Science, 1 provincial institute-Aquatic vegetable research laboratory, 4 University-level research institutes- Applied entomology institute, Economic forests institute, Landscape and garden design and tourism planning institute and Urban pest control institute, 2 University-level teaching laboratories- Plant Protection, Horticulture &Landscape Architecture, on-campus practice bases such as experimental farm and intellectual greenhouse, and over 20 off-campus practice bases including the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences(CAAS). China Ginkgo Research Association is affiliated with our college.

Our college has a high-quality faculty and staff. There are 82 staffs, among them, 21 professors and 27 associate professors, 13 tutors of Ph.D. students, 63 tutors of master students (including external tutors). There are 1000 full-time undergraduate students, 300 graduates, several oversea students and over 300 adult education students.

Our college insists on integrating theory with practice, and has distinctive characteristics and advantages in teaching, research, science and technology development, and scientific achievement transformation. Our college has one national superfine course-Entomology, 2 provincial excellent courses-Plant Pathology and Entomology, 1 provincial special major-Plant Protection, 1 provincial brand speciality-Horticulture, 2 provincial 12th Five-Year-Plan key disciplines in colleges and universities-Horticulture, Plant Protection, and 2 university-level special majors- Horticulture, Landscape Gardening. Since the 11th Five-Year Plan, our college has undertaken 31 national projects, 31 provincial projects and the total funding is up to 40 million yuan. Many research findings in several research fields reach the national-level or even the international levels. In recent years, our college has undertaken 2 provincial teaching reform projects, 6 university-level teaching reform projects and achieved over 20 teaching awards.

The college has been paid attention to communication and cooperation. It has close academic collaborations with Chinese Academy of Sciences and CAAS. It has successively built up extensive collaboration with UK, Australia, Holland, Japan and Slovenia.

During the 12th Five-Year- Plan, our college will insist on setting talent cultivation as the fundamental task and discipline construction at the leading position, and emphasizing both on teaching and scientific researching. We continuously deepen the educational and teaching reforms, strengthen discipline construction and augmenting the teaching staff, actively promote the academic researches and academic communication, combine the theory with the practice, and serve economic development of society. We strive to construct our college into a research-oriented teaching college and contribute more in constructing our university into a high-level university!
