Brief Introduction

The College of Agriculture (CA), Yangzhou University, dates back to the Nantong Institute of Agriculture founded at the late of Qing Dynasty (1902), has been playing an important role in higher agricultural education in China for more than one century. After decades of great efforts, CA has grown into an institution with clear research orientations, good curriculum development, competitive research teams and efficient faculty, and has become one of the leading institutions of education, research and social services in China in the field of agriculture.

There are three departments at CA, namely Agronomy, Crop Genetics & Breeding and Applied Biotechnology, Rural Regional Development & Information Technology, which offer both undergraduate and graduate programs of studies designed with the aim of training our students to have fundamental and excellent knowledge of modern crop and agricultural sciences. CA offers two undergraduate programs (Agronomy, Rural Regional Development), six master and doctoral programs (Crop Cultivation & Farming System, Crop Genetics & Breeding, Plant Biotechnology, Agro-food Safety & Environment, Agro-information Technology, Regional Agriculture Development), and one post doctoral program (Crop Science). The college has 75 employees including 23 professors and 22 associate professors. Current undergraduate and graduate enrollments are 678 and 412, respectively. According to the report of the Qualification Assessment of Graduate Program, Crop Science in our college ranks third (A++ grade) among graduate programs of this discipline in China.

CA now hosts a national key discipline (Crop Cultivation & Farming System), two key disciplines at provincial level (Crop Genetics & Breeding, Agro-food Safety & Environment), a key laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture (Plant Functional Genomics), two key laboratories of the Ministry of Agriculture (Crop Physiology, Ecology & Cultivation in Middle & Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River, Agro-food Safety Test and Control), and three provincial key laboratories (Crop Genetics & Physiology, Plant Functional Genomics, Crop Cultivation & Physiology). Besides, a key technology innovation center (Rice Production Technology Innovation in Yangtze River) is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture.

As an institution accredited to be funded by the provincial "211" and other Key Disciplines Programs, CA has been equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The college has made rapid progress in the following research area, crop (rice, wheat, cotton, maize and rape) cultivation physiology and ecology, crop cultivation techniques, rice molecular cytogenetic, rice genomics and molecular breeding, quantitative genetics and bioinformatics, crop (rice, maize and barley) genetics and breeding. Research grants have been growing during the past five years and reached 37 millions (US$ 5.5 millions) in 2010.

CA has been increasingly active in international cooperation and exchange and has signed the inter-institution agreement with institutions in the following countries and regions such as the United States, Japan, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, Germany and Hong Kong of China.
